The last time we redid my daughter’s room was in our old house when she was about eight-years-old. We loved that room! Buy, alas, her father and I got divorced, sold our beautiful house and my daughter and I packed up and moved to Denver to live with my mom.
My daughter inherited the bedroom that belonged to me as a teenager, and my niece {from the baby years to the elementary school years.} It was still decorated the way it was when she moved out. There was a twin bed, mismatched dressers {that belonged to my sister and I in the 80’s and 90’s}, two ballerina valances and Laura Ashley bedding.
At the time, Ella was in 5th grade and loved the room. She had always used it when we came to visit, so she was happy. Until she got to middle school, where it felt to “little girlish.” We changed the valances, bedding and artwork on the walls, but other than that, I wasn’t really willing to do a whole lot.
Now that she’s in high school, it was definitely time for another make-over. I told her we could do a top to bottom re-do for her 15th birthday and she could have creative control. Although, we did disagree on some things, in the end the vision was hers and it turned out great!
The cat loves it, too!
Where We Shopped
Our first stop was IKEA, where we bought this dresser, nightstand, bedding, and mattress. The rug was on clearance, but this one is similar.
Next, we went to At Home, where we picked up this light fixture, lamp and a full-length mirror {similar here.}
Finally, we ordered the bed on WalMart.com.
As for the wall décor, are you even a teenager if you don’t have vines and LED lights hanging in your room? We ordered those on Amazon, the “All Too Well” poster from Taylor Swift and got the poster frame at Michael’s.
We kept the valances we purchased from Target {similar here.} We already had the basket at the end of her bed {similar here,} desk chair {similar here} and bookcase. The desk is vintage, but we repainted it with Magnolia Chalk Style Paint in Blackboard. A similar Eames style rocking chair can be found at Wayfair.
I hired an electrician to install the light fixture and I used Task Rabbit to have someone build the IKEA furniture.
Let’s face it, teens spend a lot of time in their rooms. She’s no different in that respect than I was. I’m happy she enjoys spending time there and I admit, I’m a little jealous. I’m thinking Samantha Baker would be, too.
