This vintage modern apartment belongs to my friend Erin who is one of the coolest people I know. We both share a love of Hollywood, the city of Los Angeles, and pop culture. She also loves street art, Vans and Marc Jacobs. She’s spent the better part of a year visiting and photographing secret staircases in LA, and I think she’s almost seen them all. She’s a pretty well rounded human being. That being said, she lives in one of the BEST apartments using modern design which she has filled with pop culture memorabilia, family heirlooms, and a bathroom that looks like it belongs at the Whiskey A-Go-Go.
Erin and I met while doing film publicity in Denver. I had previously lived in L.A. and she and I hit it off with our love of all things Los Angeles. She eventually moved there, and I eventually moved back. While I stayed on the PR track, she started working in television. My family moved to Phoenix and she stayed in L.A. Erin can take you to some pretty funky places – Dim Sum Downtown, Kale Salad in West Hollywood, and drinks in a bar the size of my living room in Silverlake. I always have an amazing time with her.
Last summer while I was visiting, I got to hang out in her apartment, and I decided I had to take photos of it’s greatness. Erin has a lot of vintage furniture most designers would pay top dollar for. It’s been handed down to her from different family members {which means they owned it when it came around the first time, making most of it that much more special.} Her mom is an interior designer so it’s no surprise she has a knack for it herself.
I love the vintage modernism of Erin’s apartment, but I especially love the pop culture references – Marilyn Monroe refrigerator magnets, Hey Kool-Aid wall art, Andy Warhol commemorative Campbell’s soup cans, and Liza Minelli.
She also has a Marty and Elayne pillow on her couch. In case you don’t know, Marty and Elayne are an L.A. staple who have been performing at the Dresden forever. They also appeared in the 1996 movie Swingers.
Her coffee table houses vintage tin containers, and she loves chairs – so she collects miniature versions of them. She has real Eames chairs so fragile you’re not allowed to sit on them. And she’s got some super cool 70’s lamps.
I forgot to mention, Erin has a DVD and CD collection to rival any buy back store, and she’s been to more concerts that most people attend in a lifetime {her Dad plays bass guitar in his spare time. She loves music as much as she loves design.} She also has a record collection Amoeba Records would be jealous of, and that bathroom I mentioned is full of framed ticket stubs and concert art.
Thanks for letting me share your apartment, Erin! Can’t wait to have more LA adventures with you soon!
