Sara and I met through a mutual friend 19 years ago when we both lived in Los Angeles. We liked many of the same things – music, movies, and little known pop culture facts. We also loved to shop for bargains. Sara had a closet like I’d never seen, and a shoe collection you could only be envious of. Since then, we have been to countless concerts together, traveled together, and even worked together. When I decided it was time to pay her a visit in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, she asked for my help in reducing said closet {it’s a known fact that I’m pretty good at organizing stuff.} Now we can say we’ve “Kondoed” together, too.
Sara moved from Los Angeles back to Columbus in the early 2000’s. She bought her home in 2003, knowing it needed a little work to get it to her style. Her home is modern, eclectic, and fun. All that while keeping its vintage charm. For her kitchen remodel in 2009, she chose to paint her cabinets white. Quartz countertops, an aqua glass tiled backsplash, red walls, and a black and white checkered pattern floor all go together beautifully. Vintage Pyrex, favorite cookbooks, and a few knick-knacks are on display in the built-in shelving. I love the Laduree macaron trinket box, but my favorite item in her kitchen is her knitted cuckoo clock!
I am also in love with her dining room chairs from West Elm. The red flows nicely from the kitchen, while the rug ties everything together and creates a great pop of color and pattern on the floor. The gorgeous chandelier is from One Kings Lane.
Moving to the living room, the blue and red color scheme continues, and the furniture selection is contemporary. Her beautiful chairs were custom upholstered, as was the gorgeous couch. Sara purchased the David Bowie guinea pig Pets Rock Cushion while on vacation in London, and her champagne cork side table is a conversation piece and fits in perfectly with the decor.
The guest bedroom has a black, yellow, and gray color scheme. Her custom-made curtains add a beautiful floral pattern, while her side table includes more souvenirs from London, and a few family heirlooms. The master bedroom and office were too dark to photograph, and to be honest they were both “Kondo” headquarters and we’ll leave it at that! Kondoing can get pretty messy before it gets organized.
Her bathroom was redone in 2012 and she chose a white, gray and pink color scheme. I love, love, love the glass shelving above the toilet. The rest of the bathroom artwork is feminine and gives you something pretty to look at while getting ready.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this home tour! We didn’t spend the whole trip purging and cleaning, we also had a lot of fun exploring, eating and drinking. More on that later! I’ll leave you with the wise words of David Bowie, “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
P.S. This is the man of the house, and the owner of all those dog treats on the kitchen counter. Say hello to Milo!
