I just celebrated my birthday a few weeks ago and decided to ask my sister for some new make-up. Don’t tell make-up manufacturers or my dermatologist, but I don’t replace my make-up very often. Mascara, yes, but eye shadow, blush and liners seem to take me years to use up. And I refuse to just throw them away until every last drop has been painstakingly extracted.
Which brings me to why having a birthday and needing new make-up at this time of year is amazing – palettes. As a MAC addict, I’ve had many of their holiday palettes, but five years ago when my daughter was born, my BFF Mel gave me a Sephora gift card. Trying to get the most bang for my buck, I discovered a palette by Tarte.
I didn’t know much about Tarte except they were famous for their cheek stain. My palette was awesome and after five years has held up extremely well. But, I decided it was time for a new one. Once again, Tarte offered the best deal. I love my new Tarte Carried Away Collector’s Set, which is $512 worth of make-up for only $54.
The kit contains 24 eye shadows, a mini mascara, blush, blush brush, finishing powder, and eight mini lip glosses all in a beautiful Ikat print travel case. The shadows are great and long-lasting, the blush is a universal tone and works well with my pale skin, and the finishing powder gave my face a very subtle light reflecting shimmer that made my skin look five years younger.
The blush brush is good quality and is extremely soft. I do like the mascara and actually think the mascara brush applies a perfect amount of product. But, after using Dior Show for two years, any other mascara has a lot to live up to.
One of my biggest complaints about palettes is the fact that the glosses aren’t transportable unless you throw the entire kit in your purse. I don’t know about you, but a make-up palette is about the last thing I need to tote around in my purse. Thankfully, someone at Tarte figured this out as well and the eight mini glosses come in individual tubes, so you can easily transport them and use them to your heart’s content.
The other thing I love about these products is what’s not in them. There are no cooties, parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, petrochmicals, phthalates, GMO’s or Triclosan. I’ll admit, I don’t know what all of these things are, but I know what most of them are, and I know I don’t want them on my skin. I actually can’t guarantee there are no cooties, but let’s hope there aren’t.
Overall, this kit is such a great value for the amount and quality of the products. When I purchased it at Sephora, the sales girl couldn’t stop oohing and ahhing about it. She said it was the best value in the store. I agree. It’s a perfect gift for you or someone else.
I met my friend Barbara for coffee yesterday and she said I looked “very pretty.” I’ll give the credit to Tarte and my new make-up. Or maybe it’s the BB Cream. Or the new shirt I was wearing, also for my birthday. Or maybe it was all three.
The reality is buying new make-up makes you feel and look good. It can be an investment, but if you’re smart about it, you can get a lot for your money. And if you’re like me, it will last a long, long, long, long time.
